Every year students at Portland State University are allowed the opportunity to produce a feature length film from scratch. From Development all the way through to Distribution, students are faced with many challenges of learning how to work together and use the skills they have learned over the years in film school to create the best film possible.
Background Noise is a product of over 60 students work. The script went through many rewrites and what came most naturally was to create a surrealist film that focuses on the mental health and growth of an individual during their college experience. The media and peers around an individual growing up will always make life seem much more positive than it really is, and we wanted to showcase how that can actually affect someone and their relationships when going through such major changes in life. Lastly, this opportunity pushed us as filmmakers and taught us more than we ever thought we would know in such a short period of time.
