Movie Review: The Shape of Water

(9.5/10) – My Rating
The Shape of Water: Guillermo del Toro’s Disney princess and Hellboy crossover is quite a weird one. Luckily, it was the good kind of weird. Writer and Director Guillermo del Toro adds yet another masterpiece to his collection with this fantasy crime thriller. The story is paced well and only has a few unneeded scenes. However, some of those unneeded scenes are pretty graphic and may cause viewers to be uncomfortable.

The story follows a mute Sally Hawkins who plays the beauty to Doug Jones’s beast. For not being able to speak Hawkins does an excellent job giving her character a voice. The supporting cast performs equally as excellent. Octavia Spencer, Richard Jenkins, and Michael Stuhlbarg are all Oscar worthy. Michael Shannon gives one of the best performances of his career as the film’s villain.
The film certainly feels very noir thanks to all the behind the scenes work. The cinematography feels like something one would see in a classic Hollywood crime drama. The score felt very fantastical while still helping build tension. All of the art direction worked as well, but the greatest achievement in the film is the makeup job. The “amphibian man” has an incredible design that looks like a mix of the Creature From the Black Lagoon and Abe Sapien from “Hellboy.”
