Movie Review: Jumanji

(7.5/10) – My Rating

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle: I am honestly surprised to say that I really enjoyed this. Jake Kasdan’s sequel to “Jumanji” is certainly not as good as the original, but this different take is still entertaining. This one was far more comedic than the original, but that actually works rather well. I think I may have enjoyed it more though if this was a standalone film instead of a franchise one.

Four stereotypical high school student played by Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Ser’Darius Blain, and Morgan Turner are sucked into a video game and become the avatars they chose. This is where the serious comedy begins. The audience gets to see Dwayne Johnson play the nerd, Kevin Hart as the jock, Karen Gillan as the bookworm, and Jack Black as the pretty girl. Everyone is hilarious in their roles, but seeing Jack Black play a teenage girl will have just about anyone in tears.
However, the comedy covers up a lot in the film. There are plenty of plot holes to be found. The connections to the original film are very slim. Then the villain is just down right lame. Luckily, most every joke works, and the action scenes are fun.
