The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected): Movie Review

The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected): This Netflix original movie tells the story of a father and the shadow he has cast over three siblings’ lives. Dustin Hoffman portrays the distant father as Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, and Elizabeth Marvel act as the dysfunctional siblings. Hoffman does a wonderful job as the father. The audience gets to see his life very close up even though he is a very distant person. Marvel and Stiller act fantastically as well, but neither of them are the sibling that stole the show. To much surprise Adam Sandler pulls out a role that will most likely go down as his best. Instead of needing to rely on any sort of gag or schtick, he gives an unusually reserved and sort of fresh performance.

It is nice to see yet another great comedy-drama added to the collection of director Noah Baumbach’s filmography. However, both fortunate and unfortunately for Baumbach “Meyerowitz” feels like the type of film that will be on many peoples favorites lists, but somehow go criminally unrecognized during the award season.
My Rating – 9/10
